How the PetSafe ScoopFree Works
The ScoopFree keeps things deliberately simple. Your cat steps into an open-top tray filled with silica gel crystal litter. Motion sensors in the rim detect when your cat enters and exits. After a 20-minute countdown — a safety buffer that resets if your cat hops back in — a metal rake slowly sweeps the length of the tray, pushing solid waste into a covered compartment at one end.
The crystal litter does the heavy lifting on liquids. Silica gel crystals absorb urine where it lands and dehydrate solid waste, which helps reduce odor and makes the rake's job easier. Because crystals don't clump, there's nothing to sift — the rake just pushes solids aside and smooths the litter bed.
When the tray is spent, you lift the entire frame off, fold the cardboard tray shut using the included lid, and drop it in the trash. Slide in a fresh pre-filled tray and you're back in business. The whole swap takes about two minutes.
- • 20-minute delay after cat exits before rake cycle begins
- • Rake sweeps solids into a magnetically sealed waste compartment
- • Crystal litter absorbs urine and dehydrates solids for odor control
- • Health counter LCD tracks number of cat visits
- • Tray replacement alert light notifies you when it's time to swap
